UAE School Librarian of the Year Awards is Almost Here

The best librarians in the United Arab Emirates will be honored by 2017’s ‘School Librarian of the Year Award’. The Emirates Literature Foundation and The Executive Council of Dubai present the prestigious new award.  It thanks librarians for their positive influence on the development of future leaders. Any librarian within the UAE who you feel is contributing outstandingly to reading and literacy is eligible. Nominations are now open and close on 15th December 2016.

Librarians Stand a Chance to Win Exclusive Prizes

There are many fantastic prizes available. The grand prize for the Librarian of the Year is an all-inclusive trip for four to Warner Bros.’s London Studio. for a tour of ‘The Making of Harry Potter’. This also gives the winner a voucher to the value of AED2000, given for the purchase of library books and their choice of one item of library furniture. Other awards are also up for grabs, recognizing the passion and dedication of four other librarians. Prizes range from a visit to LegoLand in Dubai to library book vouchers of varying values.

The Emirates Airline Festival of Literature – March 2017


The Emirates Airline Festival of Literature running from 3rd to 11th of March will finally announce the UAE’s best librarians. A short-list will be published in January 2017, but the ‘School Librarian of the Year Award’ is presented on the 5th March during the festival. The Festival of Literature 2017 is hosting an illustrious awards ceremony, followed by an informative and engaging panel discussion. Guardian Prize winner, poet and President of the School Library Association, Kevin Crossley-Holland will be speaking at the event. This will be the ninth annual festival.

Over the years it has evolved into one of the most prominent celebrations of writing and literature in the world. Each year it brings together writers, poets and academics from all aspects of education. 2017 looks to be a great success, offering a line-up of prize winning workshops and world-renowned authors. Notable writers include Alan Titschmarsh, Fakhra Al Mansouri and Ibrahim Server, among others., therefore this is one event that cannot be missed.

The significance of reading from a young age is an aspect of education held in high regard by the Emirates Literature Foundation, as well as by the government of Dubai and UAE. Among the Foundation’s other endeavors is also an annual Arabic Language Week and both an international translation and publishing conference. Besides that, their support extends throughout the year with various creative writing courses, a school support program and many book clubs. Since its establishment in 2013, the foundation has nurtured an array of cultural and academic activities across the United Arab Emirates. Through the many debates, discussions, events and educational programs, which this foundation provides, countless youth are given brighter prospects for tomorrow.

This initiative is made possible by the grace and contributions of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.

The Emirates Literature Foundation seeks librarians who have brought innovation to learning, and inspiration to learners. All librarians from Arabic language schools as well as from international schools within the UAE can enter. Only one candidate from each library is eligible.
